How Much Money Did Alabama Football Make In 2017
Every SEC football program's gross revenue for last fiscal year
The Southeastern Conference is a money-printing machine with no signs of slowing down, especially coming off a season in which two league programs reached the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
The SEC extended its own record streak for profitability during the 2016-17 fiscal year according to recently-released financial figures, overshadowing solid paydays in the Big Ten and ACC. Nearly half of the nation's richest programs reside in the SEC, fueled by perennial powerhouses and rabid fanbases.
For this exercise, gross revenue is determined by how much is collected from supporters and numbers have been identified by the U.S. Department of Education:
The Commodores enjoyed an increase of $2.4 million in gross revenue from their previous fiscal year after getting to a bowl game during the 2016 season. It marked the first time Vanderbilt fans seemed to get behind Derek Mason's regime and build momentum. This number is particularly impressive considering Vanderbilt's home attendance is often lacking.
One of five SEC programs to actually see a decrease during the 2016-17 fiscal year compared to the previous gross revenue number, the Tigers saw a negative difference of about $1.15 million. Longtime coach Gary Pinkel announcing his retirement toward the end of the 2015 campaign probably didn't help.
The Bulldogs held steady during Dan Mullen's second-to-last season, coming out $300,000 ahead compared to the previous fiscal year, despite a disappointing finish. It'll be interesting to see where Mississippi State goes from here during the Joe Moorhead era.
You may think Kentucky is a basketball school, but football remains quite lucrative. Take this excerpt from Penn Live: "Even though the Wildcats dragged six consecutive losing seasons into 2016 with not even a bowl since 2010, their 7-6 year capped by a fleabag-bowl loss to Georgia Tech still generated 30 percent more gross revenue than Kentucky men's hoops ($28 million) during a 2016-17 SEC championship season ending with a No. 5 national ranking and Elite Eight appearance. Comparative profits: $10.8 million for football; $8.8 million for basketball."
This number will look better next fiscal year coming off a nine-win season during Will Muschamp's second campaign, but the end of the Steve Spurrier era soured fans and it showed in a noticeable attendance decline at Williams-Brice Stadium. South Carolina still managed a slight increase from $59.6 million, but not by much.
No school in the SEC saw a larger fiscal increase year-over-year than the Rebels who, despite a 5-7 record in 2016, earned $62.7 million in gross revenue, nearly $6 million more than the previous fiscal year. Before the Hugh Freeze debacle, he had the program in the national conversation after beating Alabama twice. This number should fall substantially when the 2017-18 revenue figures are made available.
Texas A&M is one of those mid-tier those programs that could join the cash cow Top 5 in the SEC ... if it starts winning big under Jimbo Fisher. Per Penn Live, "fans kept coming out (during the Kevin Sumlin era), but gross football revenue dipped more than 4 percent from 2015-16." The Aggies tied Kentucky with the steepest decline, a $3.3 million difference from the previous fiscal year.
The end of Bret Bielema's tenure may have flatlined on the field, but Hogs fans helped Arkansas pass Texas A&M in gross revenue and finished in the top-half of the SEC. The difference from the previous fiscal year was a positive $2.3 million. Coming off a 4-8 season with a new hire in Chad Morris, can Arkansas maintain?
The first of three SEC programs with near identical gross revenues from year to year, Florida won two SEC East titles under the previous regime and maintained its spot as the second-most fiscally successful team in the division. According to Penn Live, Florida came out ahead $49.1 million after expenses, the fourth-best football profit margin in the league.
LSU is tip-toeing the line between elite and good if they continue to slide further behind Auburn and Alabama in the West. Despite firing Les Miles during the middle of the fiscal year (for this exercise), attendance wasn't an issue at Tiger Stadium. The jury is still out on whether Ed Orgeron was the right hire for the program and 2018 could result in the definitive answer.
Auburn is the first of four SEC programs to top $90 million (most in any conference nationally) for the last fiscal year. Coming off an SEC West championship, wait until this number for 2017-18 releases.
The arrival of Kirby Smart energized the Bulldogs, who saw a $5.7 million increase in gross revenue from the previous fiscal year, second-highest in the SEC. That number is only going to increase when 2017-18 revenue is revealed following an SEC title and a trip to the national championship game. From Penn Live: "It was never a bad day between the hedges (during Smart's first season). Georgia passed Auburn for third place in gross revenue as all six games at Sanford Stadium were sellouts as were two split-gate matches – North Carolina in Atlanta and the Cocktail Party in Jacksonville with Florida."
Nick Saban continues to provide the jet fuel on Tuscaloosa's cash cow which is Alabama Football. Coming off the program's fifth national championship since 2008, this number will likely exceed $110 million when the 2017-18 numbers roll in. For 2016-17, the Crimson Tide enjoyed a $4.3 million increase from the previous year, which also ended in a national title.
You don't have to win to make money and the Vols are evidence of this. Tennessee's fanbase is a frenzied bunch and thanks to seven massive home games in 2016 along with the Battle at Bristol, Tennessee remains one the nation's few "mega" programs. From Penn Live: "UT's net take after expenses was a gargantuan $78.1M, largest by far in the league, as it remained the richest member of the richest conference."
